Ouija boards are also known as, and have historically been called "talking boards" or "spirit boards". Parker Brothers poularized the name Ouija through a mass-marketed talking board, and this term has come to be generically used to refer to all types of boards.

 The Ouija board is a flat board (can be made of different materials) that contains letters, numbers, words, and various symbols depending on the maker of the board. There is a separate piece called the planchette, which is a heart shaped pointer object that when fingers are placed upon it, moves around the board to spell out messages from the spirit world.

The talking board has a history dating back over 3000 years, and seems to have been controversial for much of its history. The primary purpose of this device is to receive messages from the spirit world/realm. There are many cautionary tales about using a Ouija board - it is up to you to decide if you will risk using one.

Because Ouija boards have been around a long time, there is a healthy secondary market in vintage boards and antique boards. Because of the use for contacting spirits, these boards are used by Wiccans, Pagans, and even Satanists.
